Novelty and Familiarity Maybe you need to settle down a bit and add more stability to your life. On the other hand, maybe the routine and predictability of your day-to-day living is driving you crazy or simply making you feel that youre not really living. What you need is to get creative, get out, try new things and take more risks. Think about what makes your life stable. Is it home environment, finances, church, pets, work, children, grandchildren, activities, reliable vehicle, hobbies, friendships? And what might you do differently tomorrow to add novelty to your life? Might you dress differently, go to work early, exercise, walk to work (instead of driving), start volunteering, turn off the TV during dinner, call a friend, get up early, take a walk during lunch, slow down, change radio stations, eat new foods, drive a different route or ask someone for a date? Could you make changes in the people in your life? Consider making more single friends; being more open to different types of people; taking more risks in dating; deepening ties with those you love. Might you consider experimenting with the way you are -- your personality? How about trying to be more balanced (for example between being bubbly or sad); being more serious; being more playful; expressing your anger; being more outgoing; being more outspoken; listening more carefully; being quieter; being more positive; or being less opinionated.
Two final reflections: Can one not work toward both novelty and familiarity, that is, continually build a stable foundation for a life that is rich with on-going exploration and novelty? How strange it is, when reflecting on life, that some of the craziest times were the very best of times! |
E-Question: If
you try something different tomorrow, what might it be? I would try to take more chances with people, just because I got burned badly once, I owe it to myself to give it another try.
I think.....maybe get a little more serious at times......but not like in past years.........where it made life seem so hard at times. Like always, it's a learning experience.
I would join a Jazzercise class or something similar to it.
I would take a chance at trying to date a person who has my fancy.
